PETIT LE MANS ENDS IN THE DARK FOR RYAN LEWIS
PETIT LE MANS ENDS IN THE DARK FOR RYAN LEWIS Petit Le Mans isn't supposed to be easy but the 2008 running of the epic American Le Mans Series race got tough for Ryan Lewis right from the start when his Intersport Lola-Judd ground to a halt on lap three. Ryan pulled off the track at Spectator Hill and set about trying to fix his race car. He was soon joined by mechanics from Intersport who were able to offer advice but unable to physically help Ryan. Rules are rules! After 45 minutes of hard graft Ryan got the car going and rejoined the track, delivering the car to the team in the pits. It ultimately took until over two hours into the race to diagnose an electrical problem and fix the car. Ryan completed a full stint before handing over to Luke Hines, his new British team-mate, who set off into his first American Le Mans Series race. Luke did a very professional job and brought the car home for the third driver, George Forgeois, who in turn handed back to Ryan after his trouble-free stint. After being absolute last Ryan hauled the car up to sixth in class and by the end of Luke's next stint they were up to fifth. Forgeois went back out on track for the run into the twilight but as his run was nearing the end he span coming down the hill into the last turn just as the race went green. Patrick Pilet in the no.46 Flying Lizards Porsche was unsighted by the hill and ploughed into the Intersport car, ending the race for Ryan, Luke and George, just as the night descended over Road Atlanta. “I think we were doomed from the start today,” said Ryan. “Three laps in we had electrical problems which I had to fix myself so after that we played it clean, showed good pace in traffic and didn't take too many risks. If it wasn't for the accident we were on for a guaranteed fifth place which in itself would have been a victory, but it wasn't to be. The most important thing is that George is okay; we can always put the car back together again. Obviously this leaves our participation at Laguna Seca in doubt but we'll see what happens.” The last round of the American Le Mans Series takes place in two weeks' time in California.
