Avon Tyres British Formula 3 Scholarship leader Ryan Lewis has taken pole position for Sunday's Round 18 at Silverstone, posting a time of 1m45.895s, some 0.555 seconds ahead of championship rival Stephen Jelley. The pole slot, his 11th of the series, will see him line up alongside Jelley, with series newcomer James Winslow and Vasilije Calasan behind him.
Following this morning's qualifying for Round 17, the Brackley-based T-Sport team made several changes to his BES Plc-backed Dallara F301 Mugen-Honda, in particular set-up to rear and front wings to improve downforce and reduce oversteer. With the set-up improved, Ryan was immediately the pacesetter in the 30-minute session as he continues his bid to clinch the series this weekend, with still six rounds remaining.
“I'm much happier with that obviously cos I'm on pole!” said Ryan. “I've got a bit of a margin and I was consistently below what Stephen was doing, so yeah, very happy. I missed a gear coming out of Luffield; on I think my fastest lap, so I could have gone even quicker. We put on a bit more downforce to the rear because we were struggling with oversteer at high speed and softened up the rear a bit to try and cure some of the understeer and it did it. It made the car a lot more driveable, it brought in a bit of understeer at Becketts but it was much better than this morning.”
There will be no F3 track activity at the Northamptonshire track tomorrow and the two 15 lap races will take place on Sunday at 10.05 and 15.15.
