Ryan and Ben continued to re-write the Formula Palmer Audi history book on Saturday as the championship came to a conclusion at the Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, Northamptonshire.
In the previous round at Snetterton the Building Environmental Services backed cars were also right at the front with Ryan having taken his first win in the formula. This weekend he was again on the pace it was his brother Ben, a commercial pilot by profession, who overcame the odds to win the championship with two sensational race wins. The day's qualifying sessions gave scant notice of what was to come - Ben qualifying on the outside of the third row in sixth place for the first race with Ryan right behind in eighth. Both lads were clearly getting sorted in the later session with Ben second and Ryan again starting directly behind in fourth.
Stuart Prior had set the pace in the first qualifying session and made a good start from pole position with Stephen Young tucked in behind and Howard Spooner almost on the grass on the inside. At the hairpin on the first lap Prior was swamped as the leading runners all closed up - Ben audaciously taking the opportunity to launch himself into the lead from sixth place on the grid! Ben immediately started to build a lead and eased away from the chasers. Ryan was having a good race too - he and Paul Warren traded places several times in the middle of the race before Ryan nipped past on the run up to the chicane. Meanwhile the man who led the championship after the last round, Karim Ojjeh, lost control of his car and became stranded in the gravel trap, causing the pace car to be scrambled. Ben had no problem leading away again at the restart with just three laps to run. In typical Palmer Audi fashion there was more drama to be seen as the cars entered Turn 4 on the run to the flag. Spooner suddenly slowed with a technical problem allowing Stephen Young and Ryan to shoot past and grab 2nd and 3rd finishes respectively.
Ben had little time to celebrate his first win (coupled with fastest lap) in the formula before his thoughts turned to the second race of the day and a chance to bag the title. Another superb start, this time from the outside of the front row saw him well set up to take his second win of the day plus enough points to claim the championship title. A little further back, Ryan took fifth position which was enough to secure third place in the championship - a superb result for the youngster in his first season of senior motor racing and for the Building Environmental Services team who finish as championships and in third.
